Theodore Learns About the Battle of Serobeti
Theodore the turtle was exploring a history book when he came across an interesting battle from long ago. It was called the Battle of Serobeti and it happened in 1892 in a place called Eritrea in Africa.
Theodore learned that the battle was between Italian soldiers and warriors from Sudan called Mahdists. The Italian side had about 300 men, while the Mahdist side had around 900. Even though they had fewer men, the Italians won the battle!
The Italian forces were led by a captain named Stefano Hidalgo. He bravely decided to attack the Mahdists even though they outnumbered his troops. The battle only lasted about two hours before the Italians defeated the Mahdist warriors.
Theodore was impressed to learn that Captain Hidalgo received a special award called the Knight's Cross for his bravery in the battle. The Italians captured six flags from the Mahdists and took back food and animals that had been stolen from nearby villages.
While it wasn't a huge battle, Theodore thought it was interesting to learn about this small piece of history from long ago. He wondered what other exciting historical events he might discover in his book!
