Theodore Learns About South Africa in 1835
Theodore the turtle was exploring a new part of his pond when he came across an old book floating on a lily pad. Curious, he opened it up and found a story about South Africa long ago in 1835.
"Wow!" exclaimed Theodore. "I didn't know turtles could time travel through books!"
As he read, Theodore learned that 1835 was an important year in South Africa. Many Dutch farmers called Voortrekkers started leaving their homes in the Cape Colony. They packed up their wagons and headed inland on a long journey called the Great Trek.
Theodore imagined the wagons rolling across the grassy plains. "I wonder why they left?" he thought.
The book explained that the Voortrekkers wanted to get away from British rule and find new land.
Theodore also read about a place called Port Natal that got a new name in 1835 - Durban. It was named after a British governor.
As he finished the last page, Theodore felt like he had taken a trip back in time. "History is so interesting!" he said. "I can't wait to learn more about different places and times."
Excited to share his new knowledge, Theodore swam off to tell his pond friends all about South Africa in 1835.
