Theodore Learns About Cricket in South Africa
Theodore the turtle was crawling through the grass when he heard a loud thwack sound. Curious, he poked his head out of his shell and saw a group of people playing a game with a ball and funny-looking sticks.
"What are they doing?" Theodore wondered.
He inched closer and overheard someone talking about a man named Martin Benkenstein. Theodore listened carefully:
Martin Benkenstein was born in a big city called Johannesburg in South Africa. He grew up to be very good at a sport called cricket. Martin played cricket for teams in two different places - Natal and Rhodesia.
Cricket is played with a bat and a ball. Players try to hit the ball and score runs. It's a bit like baseball, but with different rules.
Martin had three sons who also became cricket players. Their names were Dale, Brett, and Boyd. Dale even played cricket for South Africa's national team!
Theodore thought cricket sounded like an interesting game. He imagined himself as a tiny turtle, trying to swing a giant cricket bat. The idea made him giggle.
As the sun began to set, Theodore headed home. He was excited to tell his turtle friends all about Martin Benkenstein and the game of cricket he had learned about in South Africa.
