Theodore Learns About an Unusual Election
Theodore the turtle was swimming in his pond when he overheard some ducks talking about an interesting election. Curious, he poked his head out of the water to listen.
The ducks were discussing a man named Wayne Dropulich who had almost become a senator in Australia in a very unusual way. Theodore was intrigued and wanted to know more.
He learned that Wayne was an engineer who started his own political party called the Australian Sports Party. Even though very few people voted for Wayne's party, he almost won a seat in the Senate because of complicated rules about how votes are counted.
Wayne received just 1,908 votes, but that was enough to possibly win because of deals made between small political parties to share votes. This surprised Theodore - he thought the turtle with the most votes always won!
The election results were very close, and some votes went missing. This caused a lot of confusion. In the end, Wayne didn't get to be a senator after all. They had to hold a new election.
Theodore thought this was a very strange way to pick leaders. He was glad turtles just raced to see who was fastest when choosing the pond leader. Sometimes the ways humans did things were very complicated!
As he dove back underwater, Theodore decided he liked the simple turtle way of doing things best. But he was glad he learned about this unusual human election. It gave him something interesting to tell his turtle friends about later.
