Theodore Learns About a Special Submarine
Theodore the turtle was splashing around in his pond when he noticed something strange in the water. It looked like a long tube with a tower on top.
"What's that?" Theodore wondered. He swam closer to get a better look.
His friend Owl flew down and perched on a nearby branch. "That's a model of a submarine called UB-60," Owl explained. "It was a special boat that could travel underwater during World War I."
Theodore was fascinated. "Tell me more!" he said excitedly.
Owl continued, "UB-60 was built in Germany in 1917. It was about 180 feet long and could dive down to 160 feet below the surface. The submarine had torpedoes to attack other ships and a deck gun for battles above water."
"Wow, that sounds powerful," Theodore remarked.
"It was," Owl nodded. "But UB-60 was mainly used for training new submarine crews. After the war ended in 1918, Germany had to give up the submarine."
"What happened to it then?" Theodore asked curiously.
"UB-60 was being taken to be broken apart for scrap metal," Owl said. "But on the way there in 1919, it sank in the English Channel and was never seen again."
Theodore gazed at the model, imagining the real submarine's journey. "That's quite a story," he said. "I'm glad I got to learn about this interesting part of history. Thanks Owl!"
As Theodore swam away, he thought about how much there was to discover about the world beyond his little pond. He couldn't wait for his next underwater adventure.
