Theodore Discovers a Tiny Moth

Theodore the turtle was exploring the Canary Islands when he spotted something small fluttering nearby. As he peered closer, he realized it was a tiny moth!

"Hello there, little moth," Theodore said gently. "What's your name?"

The moth landed on a leaf and introduced itself: "I'm Stephensia cedronellae. I know it's a mouthful! You can call me Stephie for short."

Theodore was fascinated. "Wow Stephie, you're so small! How big are you exactly?"

Stephie explained that her wingspan was only about 6.5 to 7 millimeters wide. "That's smaller than your toe!" she giggled.

Theodore observed Stephie's wings, noticing they were a brownish color. Stephie told him that moths like her are called "elachistid moths."

"Where do you live?" Theodore asked curiously.

"I only live here in the Canary Islands," Stephie replied. "When I'm young, I eat the leaves of plants like lavender and mint. I make little tunnels inside the leaves as I munch away!"

Theodore thought that sounded like a cozy home. He was glad to meet such an interesting new friend and learn about the tiny creatures living on the islands. Even the smallest animals have amazing lives!
